July Meeting

A fun evening with the Maghull Handbell Ringers. After giving us a demonstration of several pieces of music, bells were handed out and we all had a go at playing Bobby Shaftoe! Due to the very good teacher, the tune was actually recognisable!

Garden visit June 2025

Gardens and Outings group enjoyed a very interesting and enjoyable visit to Hawthornes Nursery in Hesketh Bank. We saw lots of varieties of clematis and several members bought plants to take home.

Excursion to Birkenhead Park

This month Scarlets visited the Wirral where we enjoyed a guided tour of Birkenhead Park designed by Joseph Paxton; assisted by Edward Kemp; on which New York’s Central Park is based on. Later Edward Kemp laid out Southport’s Hesketh Park possibly to the design of Joseph Paxton.

Following the tour & walk through the parkland we travelled the short distance to West Kirby to enjoy the views of the Welsh coastline, Hilbre Island & refreshments.

Southport College- Clouds Restaurant

Tuesday 29th April ‘Clouds’ (a student run restaurant) held an American evening, their last themed event for this academic year
Several Southport Scarlets enjoyed a lovely meal including BBQ ribs, Cajun spiced chicken and key lime pie washed down with special cocktails
A great evening, looking forward to more special evenings later in the year

Lady Lever Art Gallery

Southport Scarlets enjoyed a visit to Port Sunlight village  & the Lady Lever Art Gallery this month. Members enjoyed an interesting talk on the Wedgewood collection at the gallery followed by refreshments and a stroll around the village on a beautiful spring day!

Liverpool River of Light

Southport Scarlets  visited the River of Light on Liverpool’s waterfront this month. We followed the self guide trail which included participating with a couple of the interactive light installations. After completing the trail the group visited a city centre restaurant for much needed refreshments.

Veolia Recycling Centre

The February outing began with coffee at Hartley’s Nurseries in Maghull. We then went onto the Veolia Recycling Centre, Aintree where we discovered what should be put in the recycling bin, how it is sorted, separated and then sent onto a range of reprocessing companies to use items to produce new items or quality recycled products. Several questions were asked and answered by Rachel, the Veolia visitor guide who accompanied the group.
