We all made it to the top \u2013 15<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;Floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"blob:https:\/\/southportwi.org.uk\/bb136cc7-5a6f-47ca-989f-e0700025b537\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily visibility was good and the views from the top were spectacular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"blob:https:\/\/southportwi.org.uk\/661952d3-82f9-4595-99b8-12241535ad5a\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know it was built from 1908 to 1911 for the Royal Liver Assurance Company. It was designed by architect Walter Aubrey Thomas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> It\u2019s&nbsp;made out of reinforced concrete clad with granite,  was the tallest building in Europe from 1911 to 1932 and the tallest in Britain until 1960 \u2013 the first skyscraper in Europe! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> The Liver Birds were designed by German sculptor Carl Bernard Bartels&nbsp;and cost \u00a370 each with an extra \u00a310 per bird to fix them in place! It is 322 feet or 98 metres tall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> The clock faces are 25 feet or 7.6 metres in diameter, bigger than those on Big Ben in London. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s money it cost&nbsp;\u00a358,000,000 to build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We finished the day with a lunch at Zizzi\u2019s in Liverpool One.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The&nbsp;Liver Birds!
